What the addition of Zach Calzada means for Auburn at quarterback next season

The 6-foot, 209-pounder spent the last two seasons playing wide receiver and contributing on special teams for Auburn after starting his college career as a quarterback at Howard. Newton will have one year of eligibility remaining as he takes advantage of the free year granted to student-athletes by the NCAA due to the pandemic.

During his time at Auburn, Newton appeared in 24 games, including one start this season against Penn State. He recorded just one catch -- a 31-yarder during Auburn’s loss to eventual-national champion Georgia -- but his biggest contributions came on special teams. He was credited with a pair of blocked kicks, including a game-changing punt block during Auburn’s comeback win against Georgia State early in the season, and three tackles on the year.

Prior to joining Auburn as a grad transfer two years ago, Newton spent three seasons at Howard, where he started 25 games at quarterback for the Bison and made a name for himself out of the shadow of his more famous big brother.

Caylin Newton is making his own name as a freshman at Howard, where he has led the Bison to a 7-3 record and stepped out of big brother Cam's shadow.

As a true freshman in 2017, Newton was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year while throwing for 2,432 yards, rushing for 753 more and accounting for 25 total touchdowns. He also led Howard to the biggest point-spread upset in college football history that season, as the Bison toppled UNLV in Las Vegas. Newton followed that up with a sophomore campaign in which he passed for 2,629 yards, ran for 504 yards and accounted for 26 total touchdowns for Howard. He then redshirted in 2019 before transferring to Auburn under then-coach Gus Malzahn, who was Cam Newton’s quarterback coach and offensive coordinator during the 2010 season.

Thirteen Auburn players have now entered the transfer portal since the end of the regular season, including three wide receivers -- Newton, Kobe Hudson and Elijah Canion. The other players to enter the portal were quarterback Bo Nix, running back Shaun Shivers, offensive guard Tashawn Manning, defensive linemen Caleb Johnson, Dre Butler, Daniel Foster-Allen and Romello Height, and defensive backs Ahmari Harvey, Ladarius Tennison and Dreshun Miller.
