Football Risks Killing The Golden Goose, Warns Aston Villa’s Christian Purslow

Michael Owen believes all four English sides – including Manchester United and Manchester City – could make it through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

United and City, as well as Chelsea and Liverpool, were all in the hat as the draw for the last-16 was made in Nyon on Monday – although it didn’t go off without incident.

Following a mix-up which saw United drawn against Villarreal, who they had already played in the group stages, before being wrongly excluded from facing Atletico Madrid, the original draw was declared null and void.

Having blamed the issue on “a technical problem with the software of an external service provider”, UEFA subsequently conducted a second draw, which saw three of the English sides handed new opponents.

Having avoided them in the first draw, United were eventually paired with Atletico, while City were drawn with Sporting Lisbon after having their tie with Villarreal scrapped.

Elsewhere, Liverpool were pitted against Inter Milan, while Chelsea were handed the same opponents as in the first draw as they came up against Lille.

In being drawn with Atletico, United have arguably been handed an easier tie, having been paired with PSG in the original draw.

And Owen believes either side could make it through to the quarter-finals, which could make it a full-house of English side through to the last eight.

"Simeone is one of the best managers in the world, he's done a staggering job over the years,” Owen told BT Sport.

"I think it's a tough tie for Manchester United but, on the backdrop of having played PSG only a couple of hours ago, they will take it. It's slightly easier than PSG.

"Man City's is slightly easier again. It's only Liverpool who have got a harder one. Chelsea, of course, got the same.

"Manchester United's draw is probably about par in terms of difficultly level. It's a game which could absolutely go either way. Atletico aren't on the top of their form at the moment, nor are Manchester United.

"The next couple of months will be really important [to see] which way that tie goes. Let's look at the form leading up to that game. At the minute, I don't see much between the two sides."
