Man Utd News LIVE: Rangnick ‘deal Reached’, Pochettino Manager BOOST, Haaland ‘should Snub Utd’ LATEST

Newcastle United have made their first signing under their new Saudi ownership, with England star Kieran Trippier joining in a £12million deal from Atletico Madrid.

The Magpies are set for a busy January transfer window with new boss Eddie Howe desperate for reinforcements in a bid to stave off the threat of relegation from the Premier League.

The club's new owners - led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund - have given Howe their backing this window and have made a statement signing in landing right-back Trippier from LaLiga champions Atletico on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Trippier, 31, revealed his delight at joining the Tyneside club following his switch.

Trippier told the club's official website: 'I'm delighted to be joining this fantastic club. I really enjoyed my time in Madrid, but when I became aware of interest from Newcastle United, and having worked with Eddie Howe before, I knew this was where I wanted to be.

'I'm aware there is a lot of work ahead of us but I know the demands of Premier League well and I know what an amazing club this is with very talented players.

'I can't wait to get started and I'm excited to step out at St James' Park as a Newcastle player.'

Howe added: 'I am really pleased to welcome Kieran to Newcastle United. I have long admired his abilities and have followed his career, so when the opportunity arose to secure him, we didn't hesitate.

'A lot of hard work has gone into planning for the January transfer window long before the month began, which is clear in how quickly we have been able to complete this move.

'I would like to thank everyone involved, particularly our owners, and I'm very much looking forward to working with Kieran again on the training pitch.'

Trippier touched down on Tyneside on Wednesday afternoon and went to the club's training ground to undergo a medical.

Newcastle began negotiations on the deal in December, with Trippier making it plain to coach Diego Simeone and the powers that be at Atletico that he wished to return to England to be closer to his family, having achieved his ambition of playing in Spain and winning LaLiga.

The former Spurs defender has also been drawn by the prospect of working with Howe, who first signed him for Burnley nearly 10 years ago.

It is a statement of intent from the club's new backers. Trippier has 35 caps and was a key member of Gareth Southgate's squad that reached the Euro 2020 final last year.

The signing is anticipated to be the first of many throughout the month at St James' Park, with Howe also keen to add quality in key positions.

The next priority is understood to be a centre back, with Lille's Sven Botman the prime target. More additions in defence and a centre forward are also thought to be key targets before the window shuts.

The Magpies are currently 19th in the Premier League table, two points adrift of Watford in 17th, having won just one league game this season.
