Junior Jalyn Stout led the Raiders with a match-high 14 assists and hammered home nine kills, bewildering the Tigers who had no answer for her uncommon combination of size and skill.

An auspicious surge early in the match saw Santa Fe boost its lead in the opening set from 13-4 to 20-4 behind a pair of aces by senior Rylie Tam and two kills from senior Faith Marquis. Stout collected the next two points on the attack, then closed out the game with an ace, her powerful topspin serve, at times, simply overwhelming Pensacola.

The second game fared more competitively. Senior Dima Alshiek came down on a ball that couldn’t be returned, pulling the Tigers to within 14-8 midway through the frame. Stout, however, set up a Tam kill on the next point to kick start an 11-3 run that would conclude Game Two with two more assists from Stout—to Tam and sophomore Joselyn Sanjurjo. In just two sets, Stout’s versatility had Pensacola perplexed.

“They have some great girls who swing very well, and their setter is awesome,” said Pensacola coach Kerry Clarke. “She’s athletic and tall. We haven’t faced a setter that could place the ball around the net like that.”

“Jalyn is so athletic,” Santa Fe coach Eric Marshall said. “She can get to any ball no matter where it is.”

In the final game, the Raiders trump card was their ability to serve.

Marquis, who posted a match-high 16 service points, tallied five aces in playing Santa Fe out to a controlling 11-0 lead. Tam recorded three more kills during that same stretch. Junior Sarah Falck put an exclamation point on the opening-round playoff win, scoring six of the final seven points by ace.

“We served extremely tough,” Marshall said. “We’ve worked really hard at it in practice. Overall, we were pretty efficient offensively tonight.”

Santa Fe (25-3) advances to face Yulee High (18-10) in a regional semifinal next Tuesday in Alachua. Yulee defeated Fernandina Beach 3-1 in another quarterfinal. Pensacola closes its year with a 13-12 record.

“We knew their ranking, and that coming here, it was going to be a tough spot to be in,” said Clarke. “But we also know as one of the top eight teams in our region playing, it’s a privilege to be here.”
